Massicotte was a French-Canadian artist and illustrator who is still revered by many Quebeckers for his nostalgic and sentimental illustrations of French Canadian folklore and customs. He was born at Montreal on Dec 1, 1875 and died at Sault-au-Récollet, Quebec, March 01, 1929. He produced images of French Canadian traditions for periodicals such as Le Monde illustré and L'Almanach du peuple. His brother Edouard was an ethnologist who also recorded these traditions in an effort to preserve them.

In the 1920’s Massicotte’s series of illustrations were on view in the hallways of a number of schools in Quebec. Although some of the traditions are still carried on, these prints are prized now for their depiction of a way of life that was in passing even in the 20’s.
